Position Overview

SMC Concrete & Construction is hiring an experienced, mechanically skilled professional to handle field service, equipment troubleshooting, repairs, and quality control across our agricultural, commercial, and industrial construction projects.

We need someone who can identify problems, determine effective solutions, and take responsibility for seeing the work through to completion.

This position combines hands-on mechanical service with quality control, customer support, and technical problem-solving. You'll respond to service calls, inspect projects, resolve equipment issues, and provide technical support when our crews encounter challenges in the field.

This is not an entry-level position. We're looking for a dependable professional with proven mechanical experience, sound judgment, and the ability to work independently.

Field Service & Mechanical Troubleshooting

Respond to customer service calls and diagnose mechanical or equipment-related problems.
Troubleshoot, repair, and service grain handling equipment, augers, conveyors, motors, bearings, drives, and related systems.
Identify root causes of equipment failures and implement effective, lasting repairs.
Independently manage service assignments from diagnosis through completion.

Quality Control & Project Completion

Inspect active and completed projects for workmanship, installation accuracy, and functionality.
Identify deficiencies and perform or coordinate corrective work.
Complete project walkthroughs and resolve outstanding punch-list items.
Support consistent quality standards across SMC projects.

Warranty Service & Technical Support

Investigate warranty callbacks and customer-reported concerns.
Evaluate issues onsite and determine appropriate solutions.
Assist construction crews with challenging installations, mechanical issues, and unexpected jobsite problems.
Communicate directly with customers, crews, and management.
Document service findings, repairs, and outstanding issues.
Take ownership of assigned work and follow through until issues are resolved.

Required Qualifications

Minimum 3 years of professional mechanical troubleshooting and repair experience.
Strong mechanical aptitude and hands-on experience diagnosing and repairing equipment.
Professional background in equipment repair, industrial maintenance, agricultural equipment, mechanical installation, skilled construction, or a related field.
Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
Strong understanding of machinery, mechanical components, tools, and equipment.
Ability to identify workmanship deficiencies and determine corrective actions.
Sound judgment, critical-thinking skills, and attention to detail.
Dependability, accountability, and strong communication skills.
Valid driver's license.
Ability to travel throughout SMC's service area, including occasional overnight travel.
Availability for on-call service during busy seasons, including evenings and weekends when urgent customer needs arise.

We work throughout north-central and northwest Kansas and southern Nebraska, building agricultural, commercial, and industrial projects. From concrete foundations and grain systems to steel and post-frame buildings, our crews build the structures and systems our customers depend on.

Our work includes:

Grain bins and grain-handling systems
Concrete foundations and flatwork
All-steel buildings
Post-frame buildings
Agricultural and commercial infrastructure
Equipment installation, repair, and service work

This is a hands-on position for someone who is willing to work, learn new skills, and contribute to a team.

Construction experience is preferred, but not required. We're willing to train individuals who show up ready to work, follow directions, and take their responsibilities seriously.

Construction & Jobsite Work

Assist with concrete, steel, post-frame, and grain-system construction.
Perform site preparation, material handling, equipment setup, and jobsite cleanup.
Operate hand tools, power tools, and construction equipment safely.
Assist with the installation and assembly of agricultural and commercial structures.
Work alongside crew leaders and experienced team members to complete projects.

Safety & Teamwork

Follow job plans, safety procedures, and supervisor instructions.
Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment.
Work cooperatively with crew members to complete assigned tasks.
Properly handle tools, equipment, and materials.
Travel to project locations throughout SMC's service area as required.

Skill Development & Advancement

Learn construction techniques across multiple trades.
Develop skills in concrete work, steel erection, grain systems, and equipment installation.
Take on additional responsibilities as experience and abilities grow.
